After such a warm December, I guess nature is trying to balance things out by sending yet another round of arctic air in about a week. While the models could still change their minds, as of this post, they are all on board for some very cold air arriving around next Sunday or Monday (January 19th or 20th). At least two of the models are teasing us with a chance for snow, but I won’t be mentioning chances for a few more days. I’ll be posting an update on this every day this week.

Meanwhile, many of us woke up to temperatures in the 20’s, and even some teens, this morning, except in far south Texas where the clouds hung in there a bit longer during the night. Temperatures will stay mainly in the 40’s for lows and highs in the 50’s for much of this week. We will see some pre-frontal warming (60’s and 70’s) on Friday and Saturday, ahead of the arctic air. I don’t see any chance for rain this week.

On a side note, a weak La Niña finally arrived in December, but is forecast to shift into neutral by March or April. Pretty much a flip of the coin on how that will impact our spring, but neutral is better than La Niña in most cases for rainfall. From the CPC: “La Niña Advisory Synopsis: La Niña conditions are present and are expected to persist through February April 2025 (59% chance), with a transition to ENSO-neutral likely during March-May 2025 (60% chance).”

This morning’s lows.

7day rainfall forecast from the NWS.

Temperatures will be averaging slightly below normal this week.

A major outbreak of arctic air may arrive next Sunday the 19th…

It’s looking like a cold end to January with better than even odds for above normal precipitation odds!
