A pleasant day out there with most of our area in the 70’s (still way to warm for December). We will cool down into the 30’s and 40’s overnight and see mainly 60’s on New Year’s Day. We’ll keep the 40’s and 60’s through Saturday, then warm into the upper 70’s on Sunday ahead of our first burst of cold air on Monday. Depending on what time the front arrives, we could see a backward upside-down day, where the highs will be in the early morning just before the front arrives. I expect temperatures to drop into the 40’s on Monday and may not rise into the 50’s, even in the afternoon. On Tuesday and Wednesday morning of next week, most locations will see 20’s and 30’s for lows and will struggle to reach the mid 40’s each day. Around Thursday of next week, we will see our big booster shot of arctic air arrive! It’s possible that we may not get above freezing next Friday and Saturday, (the 10th and 11th) so please make proper preparations this weekend before the cold air arrives next week.

As far as snow odds go, this is the third day in a row that the Euro has predicted snow for Thursday night through Saturday of next week, with some whopper totals (see graphics below). The GFS is more conservative on its totals, but even it is forecasting up to 6 inches along HWY 90 and I-10 east. The NBM is forecasting snow, but only a dusting. Normally with arctic air we only see freezing drizzle because it is above freezing above the arctic high pressure, but the models are forecasting and upper-level low to develop next week in Mexico, then track eastward over Texas. If this happens, there will be cold air aloft, allowing snow to form. We are still over a week away, so hold off on ordering any sleds from Amazon! Colder than normal temps are forecast to stick around through the 14th but should start modifying a bit.

If you are heading out to watch fireworks tonight, certainly bring a jacket, as temperatures are predicted to be in the 40’s around midnight.

I’ll be taking off tomorrow, so we should certainly have a better idea of snow odds for next week by my Thursday post.

Have a safe and fun New Year’s Eve!

Mark
